The most severe, life threatening type of allergic reaction, anaphylaxis can be caused by a number of factors.  Food allergies, latex exposure, insect stings, medications and unknown factors can all trigger this quickly progressive reaction.

Injectable epinephrine is the treatment of choice for stopping this type of allergic reaction.  It is available by prescription in a self adminstered form and should be carried by everyone who has experienced anaphylaxis.  Anyone caring for a young child prone to anaphylaxis should be trained and comfortable with the use of the particular device prescribed for that child.

Anaphylaxis should be managed by an allergy expert.  Only those trained in immunology should attempt to evaluate and manage the long term care of those experiencing anaphylaxis.
