Eczema is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disorder resulting in “patches of red, scaly, itchy skin.  The most common presentation is in the young child with elbows and knees affected.  All age groups can suffer with eczema and it can occur anywhere on the body.  Food allergies may only be responsible for outbreaks 5% to 8% of the time but can represent a preventable cause.  For this reason, eczema that is severe or does not respond to therapy should be evaluated by the allergist or dermatologist.

The mainstay of eczema therapy is moisturizing the skin.  No one moisturizer is well tolerated by all patients so find the one that works for you without burning or irritation.  Lotion that is well tolerated is used more frequently.  Some examples of effective moisturizers include;  Aveeno lotion, Curel Free, Aquaphor ointment, Eucerin products, Free and Clear lotion, Vaseline and DML lotion.
