Food Allergy

Only affecting approximately 5% of the population in the United States, food allergies can be the most severe form of allergic disease.  Fatalities are far too common today given our knowledge, ability to identify and avoid food allergens.  Effective treatment exists for accidental exposure to known and unknown allergens that result in anaphylaxis.

Food allergies are blamed for many symptoms from behavior problems to abdominal cramping and even constipation.  It is important to distinguish potentially life threatening food allergens from irritant effects of foods.  This can usually be done with simple skin scratch testing or ImmunoCap blood testing.  IgG food allergy testing is a costly irrelevant test ordered by physicians not familiar with true food allergies.  Allergists trained by one of the accredited institutions are THE only qualified group of physicians specializing in food allergies and their therapy.

Eczema can be triggered by food allergies 5% to 8% of the time.  Patients suffering uncontrolled eczema should be evaluated for food allergy using on of the approved methods of testing.

To date, allergy avoidance is the only effective therapy for day to day control of food allergies.  New therapies are being investigated but currently no effective oral drop, injection, acupuncture or detoxification regimen can treat true food allergies effectively.
